"A Star Is Born" (2018)

Bradley Cooper climbs into the director's chairs to tell us how he discovered Lady Gaga in this remake of a remake of a remake. Washed up country singer Jackson Maine wanders into a club and meets Ally, a supposedly struggling singer that has the vocal range like established singer Lady Gaga. From there, their relationship instantly blooms. He brings her onstage like he's Charles Foster Kane and she is picked up by a recording agent. She sings on Saturday Night Live with Alec Baldwin hosting for the "eighteenth time." She wins Best New Artist at the Grammys, but Jackson upstages her moment by whizzing on stage.
Throughout the movie, Jack struggles with his alcohol and drug addiction. The Grammy incident was sort of a wake-up call as Jack is sent to rehab. He becomes clean just in time for Ally to discover a love song he wrote. Then when you think it's going to be okay, he hangs himself in the garage while Ally was out performing. The movie ends with Ally singing the song in a tribute to him.
I've heard of an Oscar-baited film, but I've never heard of a Grammy-baited film. The movie has an outstanding soundtrack with original performances by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. But if it were to be an Oscar-baited film, I think it could be for Best Cinematography and Best Film Editing. That's it. It can be nominated for Best Picture and Best Actress for Lady Gaga but no win. I'm not saying Lady Gaga was terrible. She was amazing in a less than stellar role. It's like Christina Aguilera in Burlesque; two established singers in an origin story where their characters want to be singers. Wouldn't it make more sense to cast a nobody that has a powerful set of pipes as Ally?
Speaking of casting choices, 74-year-old Sam Elliott and 43-year-old Bradley Cooper playing brothers make as much sense as 72-year-old Cher being 69-year-old Meryl Streep's mother in Mamma Mia 2. I can only imagine Sam Elliott is the son of the family Jack's dad worked for, and the family took him in after Jack's dad died, and they kind of grew up like brothers. But you know, whatever I have to tell myself so I can sleep at night.
I don't really bring the production budget or the box office into play because no matter how much the movie cost or how much the movie made, it can either be good or be bad. But there was an insane amount of product placement with SNL and the Grammys, as well as Interscope Records recording Ally's music. Interscope makes sense because they also did the movie's soundtrack. Despite the properties shown in the movie, the production is a meager $40 million dollars. I'm impressed.
I will end with the positive elements. Killer soundtrack, Lady Gaga, beautiful cinematography, fantastic film editing, and a sudden tug at some heartstrings with cutting from Ally singing Jack's song to Jack singing the song. There can be a Best Director nod to Bradley Cooper.
